3 September 1991

Professor C Oxnard
HEAD, DIVISION OF AGRICULTURE AND SCIENCE.

Dear Professor Oxnard,

PERMANENT APPOINTMENT SUBJECT TO REVIEW: DR D J RINDOS

You wrote to Personnel Services on 6 August 1991 enclosing Dr Rindos' Summary of Activities for the period June 1990 - May 1991 together with comments from the Head, Department of Archaelogy, Professor S Bowdler. Your letter referred to the need for a response from you which you foreshadowed would take a little time.

Dr Rindos took up his appointment on 13 June 1989 and the summary referred to above was the second of three such summaries required under the University's tenure review process.

In view of the comments by the Head of Department and other events which took place during this period it is most important that you complete your enquiries on this matter and submit your recommendations. Any programme which you might propose to enable further, independent assessment of Dr Rindos must be in place in sufficient time to give him the opportunity to meet the University's requirements, or not, and to enable the University to arrive at a decision on his tenure by the end of his third year, i.e. 13 June 1992. Would you please let me know by the end of September what arrangements you have made?

Under the terms of Dr Rindos' Conditions of Appointment and the Regulations Governing Tenure and Dismissal it is possible for me (as Vice-Chancellor) to extend Dr Rindos' period of review up to a maximum of four years. However, such an option is usually only exercised on the basis of a documented review and assessment process undertaken during the initial three year period which indicates some possible benefit from the extension or to give a reasonable period of notice to an unsatisfactory member of staff.

Yours sincerely,

/signed/
